Institute of Spirits

A system for reasoning about spirits, not for scoring them.

Without context there is no judgement.

We do not assess whether a bottle is good. We document whether a technical production decision is representative, whether it can be tasted, and what evidence supports it. Every statement is traced back to its source and can be corrected without losing authority.

“Knowledge is not static.

It is built, questioned, corrected and shared.

The Institute's knowledge network: history, technique, raw material, process, territory, categories, producers, regulation, culture and perception connected to one another

Two ways of generating knowledge

Everything begins with where the data comes from.

Case Files and In the Field are not told apart by subject, but by where the evidence comes from.

Sample analysis01

Case Files

A technical production decision, illustrated by one or several bottles as evidence. Never a verdict on whether the bottle is good. The aim is to establish whether the decision behind it is representative and tasteable.

A 14 month old whisky that tastes like a 6 to 7 year old one can become a case of accelerated maturation, not a purchase recommendation.

Direct experience02

In the Field

What is observed on a visit, a conversation with the producer, something verified where it happens. It cannot simply be reconstructed from a spec sheet or a search.

Information is searched on Google. Judgement is trained in the field.

Organisation

Nothing enters or leaves The Essentials without leaving a trace.

Nine working spaces along a single path. First how evidence enters, then how it is organised and connected, then what reaches The Essentials and finally how it is preserved and made transparent.

How evidence enters

  1. 01

    Case Files

Complete research with traceability and sources.

  2. 02

    In the Field

Direct experience. What is observed on a visit, a conversation with the producer or something verified where it happens.

How it is organised and connected

  1. 03

    Observatory

A thematic umbrella by category. It allows the Case File archive to be browsed by raw material rather than publication date. The lateral view is a way of working inside the Observatory.

  2. 04

    Specimens

Analytical records of spirits, bottles and producers. They are the objects that hold up the evidence of a Case File.

  3. 05

    Concordances

Unexpected connections between ideas, data and concepts.

What reaches The Essentials

  1. 06

    The Essentials

What any professional should know. Only the best examples in each category.

How it is preserved and made transparent

  1. 07

    Historical Archive

Retired cases and documents that explain the present.

  2. 08

    Amendments

    Corrections, updates and methodological notes.

  3. 09

    Registry

    Recent activity, decisions and transparency.

The Essentials

Only the best examples in each category.

A fixed attention budget. To get in here, something better has to leave.

A case only stays if it survives the fire test.

If we could only save one bottle to explain this, it would be this one.

How The Essentials works

Atlas of Spirits

The world of spirits, ordered by territory, producer and specimen.

The Atlas is travelled from the map to the record. Each pin is a documented distillery, each country groups the specimens we study and each record points back to the recorded evidence.

How we work

The method, not just another space

  1. 01

    Independence

Receiving a sample does not oblige us to assess it. If it does not convince, it is not published.

  2. 02

    Traceable evidence

Everything Known has a recorded source, date and verification.

  3. 03

    Revisable

A data point can be corrected. The correction is documented, not hidden.

  4. 04

    Transparency

The commercial relationship with each producer is always declared.

  5. 05

    Cadence, not quota

We measure the work done, not the cases produced.

Constitution

What is not negotiable

The document that sets out the mission, the evidence system and the limits of the Institute. Eight articles that can be amended, always in writing and on the record.

01

Preamble

What the Institute researches, how far it goes and what it decides never to do.

04

The evidence system

How each data point is documented, who verifies it and when it can be published.

05

Independence

How each commercial relationship is declared and what a sample does and does not oblige.

Two ways in

Open knowledge shows the method. Membership opens the working room.

The Institute does not work as a content catalogue. It works as an infrastructure sustained for those who genuinely need it.
